WOW! have set up an award to celebrate selflessness and commitment in memory of a much loved volunteer.
In May 2012, WOW! sadly lost one of its most keen and valued committee members to cancer. Helen Temperley, 38, was a longstanding member of Witham Amateur Operatic Society and a founder member of WOW! In her memory and with the permission of her family, we have acquired a silver cup which is to be called the Helen Temperley Memorial Award. This will be awarded each year to the member of WOW! who most embodies the positive qualities that Helen exhibited, namely loyalty, hard work and selfless commitment, while maintaining a great sense of fun and enjoyment in everything she did. We hope that this award will be both a fitting and lasting tribute to Helen, as well as an inspiration to the young people of WOW! whom Helen supported from the group’s inception.
Michael Watling, 18, was the first recipient of the Helen Temperley Memorial Trophy. WOW! Chairman Stewart Adkins said: “This was a tough decision since there are many wonderful young people in WOW! right now. However, Michael has been involved for many years and has always been committed, loyal and an excellent role model for the younger members”.
Michael Watling receives the Helen Temperley Memorial Award. He is presented the award by Helen’s husband Blake and their six year old daughter Lily
